Windhoek, Namibia, known for its vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes, surprised us with its proximity to numerous game farms. Just an hour away from the city center, we found ourselves immersed in the beauty of the bush. One particular highlight of our trip was a visit to N/aán ku se, an extraordinary place dedicated to conservation and community upliftment.

N/aankuse, a beacon of conservation nestled in the heart of Namibia’s wilderness, stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of wildlife, landscapes, and local communities. This remarkable foundation, driven by an unwavering commitment to preserving Namibia’s natural treasures, operates on a multifaceted approach that goes beyond conventional conservation efforts.

Described on their website as, “Our purpose is to help conserve the landscapes of Namibia, to protect the wildlife, and to improve the lives of the people we work with through sustainable innovative commercial activities,” N/aankuse goes beyond the ordinary. The foundation’s multifaceted approach includes outreach programs, conservation initiatives, a rhino anti-poaching unit, a K9 unit, and commercial activities such as game drives and restaurants.
One of the most remarkable aspects of N/aankuse is the opportunity for volunteers to actively participate in their mission. With over 300 residents volunteering at the facility, the Naankuse Primary School and the Naankuse Lifeline Clinic provide essential education and healthcare services to the local community.
Intriguingly, N/aankuse caught the attention of none other than Angelina Jolie, who chose to partner with the Shiloh Jolie-Pitt Foundation in honor of her Namibian-born daughter. Established in 2017, the Naankuse anti-poaching units consist of fearless individuals trained by ex-military specialists, driven by a shared commitment to safeguard vulnerable and critically endangered wildlife species.

The former focuses on public interactions, offering insights into visitor experiences and accommodations, while the latter delves into the organization’s core conservation efforts. During our visit, we opted for the cheetah walking experience, toured the anti-poaching and K9 units, and explored the conservation unit, where we were fortunate to encounter an albino porcupine.
