As the year draws to a close, Karla’s top pick for December brings you another exciting adventure. In our perpetual quest to travel more, whether locally or overseas, 2023 marked a year of exploration, especially in our local surroundings. One standout journey took us to the heart of Windhoek, Namibia, where serendipity led us to a long weekend with family. Join us as we delve into the details of our unforgettable experience and uncover the hidden gems of Windhoek.

Windhoek, Namibia

Windhoek, Namibia, known for its vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes, surprised us with its proximity to numerous game farms. Just an hour away from the city center, we found ourselves immersed in the beauty of the bush. One particular highlight of our trip was a visit to N/aán ku se, an extraordinary place dedicated to conservation and community upliftment.

N/aankuse Overview

N/aankuse, a beacon of conservation nestled in the heart of Namibia’s wilderness, stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of wildlife, landscapes, and local communities. This remarkable foundation, driven by an unwavering commitment to preserving Namibia’s natural treasures, operates on a multifaceted approach that goes beyond conventional conservation efforts.

At its core, N/aankuse is a guardian of landscapes, striving to conserve the diverse ecosystems that define Namibia’s beauty. The foundation extends its protective embrace to wildlife, from vulnerable species to those critically endangered, deploying world-class anti-poaching units manned by fearless individuals trained by ex-military specialists. Beyond safeguarding nature, N/aankuse is a catalyst for positive change in local communities, offering outreach programs, education through the Naankuse Primary School, and essential healthcare services via the Naankuse Lifeline Clinic.

Moreover, N/aankuse is not just a haven for wildlife enthusiasts but also a hub for responsible tourism. Its commercial activities, including immersive game drives and culinary experiences, provide visitors with an opportunity to witness firsthand the beauty of Namibia’s landscapes and contribute to the foundation’s conservation efforts. The dynamic synergy between conservation, community upliftment, and sustainable commercial activities sets N/aankuse apart as a visionary force in the realm of wildlife preservation.

As a visitor, the dedication and passion of the staff are palpable, creating an unforgettable experience that resonates with the essence of true conservation. In every aspect, N/aankuse emerges as a sanctuary where the delicate balance between nature and humanity is not only preserved but also celebrated, making it a shining example of responsible and impactful conservation in the heart of Africa.

Purpose

Described on their website as, “Our purpose is to help conserve the landscapes of Namibia, to protect the wildlife, and to improve the lives of the people we work with through sustainable innovative commercial activities,” N/aankuse goes beyond the ordinary. The foundation’s multifaceted approach includes outreach programs, conservation initiatives, a rhino anti-poaching unit, a K9 unit, and commercial activities such as game drives and restaurants.

One of the most remarkable aspects of N/aankuse is the opportunity for volunteers to actively participate in their mission. With over 300 residents volunteering at the facility, the Naankuse Primary School and the Naankuse Lifeline Clinic provide essential education and healthcare services to the local community.

Intriguingly, N/aankuse caught the attention of none other than Angelina Jolie, who chose to partner with the Shiloh Jolie-Pitt Foundation in honor of her Namibian-born daughter. The foundation has been a steadfast supporter of N/aankuse’s work, adding a touch of celebrity endorsement to its impactful endeavors.

My highlight

What left an indelible mark on us was the passion and dedication exuded by the knowledgeable staff. The anti-poaching unit, in particular, stood out as a world-class force, protecting not only N/aankuse-managed reserves but also neighboring farms. Established in 2017, the Naankuse anti-poaching units consist of fearless individuals trained by ex-military specialists, driven by a shared commitment to safeguard vulnerable and critically endangered wildlife species.

Website

Navigating the N/aankuse website can be a bit perplexing, with two distinct portals: https://www.naankusecollection.com/ and https://www.naankuse.com/. The former focuses on public interactions, offering insights into visitor experiences and accommodations, while the latter delves into the organization’s core conservation efforts. During our visit, we opted for the cheetah walking experience, toured the anti-poaching and K9 units, and explored the conservation unit, where we were fortunate to encounter an albino porcupine.
